Effective Teamwork Really Matters
My wife is the Principal of an elementary school here in Texas. She is directly responsible for the safety and scholastic advancement of over 650 children ages 4 to 11 and the safety of a staff of 75. Being effective in the classrooms is a no brainer for our kids advancement and teamwork ensures such. While there are tons of action plans, lesson plans, safety plans and OTHER plans, here in Texas the ONLY valid plan for snow storms is for schools to close and the children staff to stay at home. The roads are simply impassible and it becomes too dangerous for school to remain in session.
During a recent snow storm, I accompanied her to her school to make sure that none of the pipes had burst and that things would be safe for the school children and staff to return when the school district determined the roads were passible again. Imagine two inches of ice accompanied by 72hrs of temperatures well below freezing. Effective teamwork was truly necessary.
Our primary concern was determining if the sidewalks were safe, the pipes were intact and there were no leaks and that the heat was operable and the school was warm. We were quickly made aware by one of her staff though that there were guinea pigs and hamsters in some of the classrooms that the children had adopted and were caring for. Imagine our huge concern when we imagined them being locked in their little cages for the past 3 days with no interaction, food, water and possibly no heat. There was no way we could allow the students (their loving caretakers) to return to school and experience what we imagined as the inevitable. I mean how do you really handle this conversation with the little ones and how much of a distraction from their academics could this possibly be?
As we approached each of the three rooms with pets we hesitantly peered into the cages for any signs of life. Any noises or movement would be a welcome indicator that things were ok. Here is how things went :
Effective Teamwork can Make Difficult Tasks Easier to Bear
ROOM 1 CAGE 1
We cringed when we noticed VERY LITTLE WATER and NO FOOD AT ALL. At first no movement either. But then two guinea pigs
emerged from their little shelter inside of their cage and began to chirp and move about frantically as if to let us know how delighted they were to see us. Even though they had never seen us before it felt as if they knew we were there to help them out. I could hardly get my hand out of the cage before they rushed the food bowl I had just filled and began gorging themselves. And just like that it seemed as if they had forgotten we were there and were immersed back into their own little guinea pig world. They had become empowered with their basic needs and were adept at moving on with surviving.
ROOM 2 CAGE 2
NO WATER, NO FOOD AND NO MOVEMENT……Oh boy, this could get ugly fast. We hesitantly stirred about around the cage and a little guinea pig emerged. Again he chirped as if to express a welcome. As I opened the cage to grab the food bowl he attempted to jump out as if to say, “Get me outta here!” I literally had to close the cage door on him to keep him from exiting stage left. Then I was
startled by more movement in the cage a second lethargic guinea pig emerged. This little guy was much slower and much more deliberate, but very alive. We immediately filled their water bottle and were amazed at how fast and how much the little guys consumed. They ignored the food bowl until they had their fill of water and only then did they start to eat. I immediately told my wife that I remember learning you can live much longer without food than drinking water. It is such a basic necessity for survival for all living beings. It was funny to notice that just like before as soon as these little guys had their basic needs met, they were almost oblivious to us being there. Mission accomplished, moving on.
ROOM 3 CAGE 3
Water, food….. NO MOVEMENT. This is the story of the hamster named “Grumpy”. Upon entering the room I immediately noticed that there wasn’t a cage. There was an elaborate environment that was enclosed. There were tunnels, a wheel, several different compartments to move around in. There was even a wheel for exercise. I mean in comparison to the cages the guinea pigs were in,
this was a mansion. The environment was so elaborate it took me a little bit to find Grumpy’s little dead body. The one thing Grumpy didn’t have was a companion. Could not having a companion (teammate) with the common goal of survival have been Grumpy’s demise? I have to say I think it was a huge factor. Upon finding his little body and removing him I couldn’t help but notice that this little guy had already started to stink. How long had he actually been dead? When did he give up?
How Does This Story Relate to Effective Teamwork in Business and Life?
To be successful in any of these areas you must have the benefit of others supporting and encouraging you to survive. Going at it alone will inevitably lead to despair and possibly extinction. If you feel like “Grumpy” you must immediately find help. Could it really be that by simply having a teammate in life or business you directly increase your chance of survival or success? Absolutely!
I am a believer in principles involving the law of attraction, visualization, positive thinking and so on. One of the principles I firmly believe in is the power of masterminding. Power, as the term is used here, specifically refers to organized effort, sufficient enough to enable an individual to transmute desire into it’s equivalent. (This equivalent could be money a home, a successful business, a successful marriage, etc.) Organized effort is produced through the coordination of effort of two OR more people, who work toward a definite end in the spirit of harmony.
When looking to achieve success in ANY area we have access to an abundance of general knowledge. The internet and social media have successfully bridged the gap between knowing and not knowing. But if we depend upon our access to information and our efforts alone, the difficulty we encounter can be enormous. However, if we have comprehensive plans and we can induce others to cooperate with us we can decrease difficulty and increase productivity, significantly improving the odds of success.
The economic feature of masterminding is obvious. Economic advantages may be created by any person who surrounds himself with the advice, counsel and personal cooperation of a group of peers who are willing to lend wholehearted aid, in a spirit of harmony. This form of cooperative alliance has been the basis of nearly every great fortune. Understanding this truth may definitely determine your financial status.
Ask yourself honestly, Who do you rely on in your business efforts? Are you part of a team or are you simply holding the hands of others? Even worse, are you looking for help and not getting answers? STOP working at your success alone today!
